What Dream May come

so i'm just gunna mention just how awesome i think this film is because i remember watching this when i was young and thinking how unbelievable it was seeing something look so real yet know it wasnt too and i think this works well into the project because of the amount of compositing there is and cgi effects put into it.

ignore rubbish song though lol

concept art - fantasy world

so right now I'm doing some concept art for the fantasy world that we are going to have in our film now from looking at shotgun and the roles that Dom assigned ill be working with Deon and Sarah on it, so i thought when talking to Dom about it that i could come up with some basic ideas of what i thought it could look like just to begin a point in which we can brain storm ideas and moods for the fantasy world resulting in a more finalised idea and concept. so i knew that we were going for a very tim burton style so i just started looking at some of Tim burtons movies and the sets from them, now from them i got a very basic view of how the fantasy world could look, along with having a basic description from Dom on how the world would be

HER FANTASY WORLD WILL BE:
It has to be warm and safe. Where she can feel relaxed
She sees a swing tied to a tree (with cloth tied to it for Lily’s ncloth). Will there be a breeze?
As she runs closer she sees a spider on the swing. She then hears whistling of incy wincy spider.
Like a television, she begins to have a flash back that’s fuzzy of a man kneeling over a dead body. You can only see him from behind but the tattoo on the back of his neck is prominent.
As she remembers this her fantasy world shatters and you hear the door swing open.
We see the man with the tattoo on the back of his neck from behind as he walks in and closes the door on the audience.

so realising the tree would be one of the main concepts within the fantasy world when i saw this picture of a tree from the film sleep hollow i felt that it would be perfect due to the stylisation and how it would fit perfectly.

when i looked at these pictures again i liked the thought of everything being bigger than life to show that contrast from reality and that could be shown through the tree and the swing being alot more bigger than compared to the norm.

so these were the basic ideas i had for the design for the world , but for the mood of the place i was still not sure , now from Dom description of it it had to be warm and safe , now i thought of those words and i thought paradise but more comforting and thinking from that a film came into mind a very old film..well a 13 year old film i think , it starred Robin williams and was called What dreams may come now this film first came to mind due to i remember vividly a certain part in which it showed their version of paradise almost like a heaven within the film and i felt that mood is close to what we might want.

so from these pictures i found that are from the film i felt showed the mood i would think we would want to portray through both the lighting and color also the use of warm colors of oranges , yellows and burnt browns. creating an autumn feel towards it.

ideas for the story

so when everyone was deciding upon ideas and we had come up with the little miss muffet idea , from there we decided on twisting it up a bit and dom along with lily and sarah came up with these ideas and then explained it to us from which we all expanded on it a bit more and these is what came up.

Story of idea
Spider could be an abusive boyfriend possibly?
To escape Little Miss Muffet’s fears, she could escape to her own fantasy world like Alice in Wonderland, Paranoia Agent and Paprika. Despite feeling content, a spider slowly crawls down from the umbrella she’s holding and meets her at eye level. She freaks out and quickly drops the umbrella. Her fear grows when she hears whistling of incy wincy spider.
Can cut back to reality and we see the guy spider walking up to her holding weapons while whistling the incy wincy spider song.
For her fantasy and real world, she could be dressed in different outfits to differentiate both worlds. Her clothes as well as the world can show her level of comfort and security.

Begins with banging on the door, muffet rocking back and forth. It stops and all is silent. He starts whistling and she puts her hands over her ears rocking more fiercely back and forth then you hear lock picking. She shakes her head and closes her eyes (zooms in). Zooms out and she’s in her fantasy world.

HER FANTASY WORLD WILL BE:

SCRIPT

Maybe on a chair or a bed. She slowly rocks back and forth with a dazed expression as she hears aggressive banging on the door and the door knob shaking viciously.
Then suddenly all stops. She breaths heavily but quietly, slightly relieved. However, the silence is broken by the menacing whistling and quickly she cups her ears with her hands trying to block that dreadful song. She rocks back and forth more furiously as you can hear locking picking now.

Zooms into face as she starts whimpering slightly (possibly) Zooms into her eyes looking terrified as she suddenly shuts them hard. The sounds stop. All is quiet. She slowly opens her eyes and the camera zooms out. We see she’s wearing different clothing and the environment is completely different too. She gradually drops her hands away from her head and relaxes her shoulders in relief. She gives a heavy sigh of relief. She turns to see a swing tied to trees. Slowly she walks cautiously, then begins to lightly sprint and then comes to a sudden halt. There, on the swing is a spider sitting there.

The spider triggers off a flash back that’s hazy because she can barely remember it since she locked it away so tight. There, she stares at a man whistling and kneeling over a dead body. What’s most prominent is the spider tattoo on the back of his neck. Without time to react, the man turns his head towards her but the audience never sees his face.

Little Miss Muffet’s fantasy begins to break and disappear and we’re back in the bedroom. Camera is still focused on her face but we hear the door open.
Camera cuts to behind the man and we can see the spider tattoo on the back of his neck. He steps in and closes the door on the audience.

Notes taken 02

So here were some lighting notes that i got from Dom to help me understand a bit more on the lighting we would have to do for this project:

These were the points that came out from within the lecture

-Need to make sure the lighting from the real world matches the model.
-Need to understand how to replicate lighting. To make it realistic/believable.
-Need to consider all lighting.
-Need to consider how lighting affects the mood.
-Flat blanket of light = Ambient light. A base light. Softens the light and gives a more natural atmosphere. This is done by covering with something like tracing paper.
-You can mimic this in Maya by making the lighting larger and changing the colour. You can’t diffuse the light however.
Tim Burton seems to prefer softer lighting.

LOOK AT TERMINOLOGY Kino lights

Analyse what you need to do, know about the limitations of Maya. Need a lighting diagram. How it looks in the real world and how to achieve that.

When you’ve chosen your environment, go there, take photos and visit!
Soft light camera at the front – loses some details, can hide spots, blemishes, etc. Beauty adverts, photography uses this. Makes everything seem flat.
Low lighting = Sinister, horror. Cliché. Film Noir for example.

Higher the number, the hotter the temperature.

5000-6000k – High

The colder the light is, the warmer it looks. Red>White>Blue

Need to let the tutors know if we want to achieve the colour of light to get gels.

A cold light – Maybe would use green, cyan for a wintery effect like the film Sleepy Hollow.

Look at a lot of different types of lighting!

ive also from doing a lighting tutorial for my other project the industries exercises 2 i bought a book that jared had recommended called Painting with Light by John Alton

the book helped by showing me how to set lights to create not just the enviromental lighting for sets so like certain times of daays but ways in which to show emotion through the lighting and what type of lighting needs to be done to portray that mood so now that ive got the theory behind me ill need to try it through maya and play with it to compensation for the reality variable.

Notes taken

so from thinking about the project so far i thought i should have a look at some examples and here's some that came to mind:

men in black
avatar
roger rabbit film
paula Abdul's music video
space jam

It might be better to make the shorts very straight forward so it’s easier to edit in post production.

SOUND
so Sound is firstly synced to the picture.
Any sound effect and ADR (see PDF) is added.
Software used to do this is Pro toold.

VFX AND COMPOSITING

Any effect added (composited)

Any 3d objects are added Inc Chromo key (Green or Blue Screen work)

This can be anything from a car to a spaceship.

Have to make sure that when filming live footage that the green screen and anything else is lighted properly, the reason being is that you don't want and shadows or spills cause it will then mean you will have to cover certain parts up and also we don't really want to re film again cause we don't have much time within the studio's.

The beginning

So today is the start , from looking at the brief in which Dom sent me a more summarised up version showing the key points here is what i have learned from it.
The brief is split into 3 main parts.

-Film production and editing techniques
-3D compositing techniques
-Formatting requirements of Broadcast output

In the first few weeks it seems we will be encouraged to form groups, once groups have been formed we will then begin to gather live action footage and from that footage we need to integrate 3D aspects within it creating a short film.we will then be introduced to essential digital effects techniques and group working.

so i was told by dom who's group I'm part of for this project that we were to come up with ideas by Monday, so that it could then be posted onto the group blog and within the next lesson we would discuss all the ideas we had and from there and come out with the strongest one.

You are also required to produce an individual piece of work incorporating live action and 3d animation (to be agreed individually with your tutor).

Basically means they want one video clip, but they want to be able to clearly highlight your contribution to the group.

The last few weeks of the project will concentrate on developing your editing techniques as well as utilizing the effects available to you on your compositing software. You will also be introduced to industry workflow practices such as filing conventions and formatting requirements for broadcast content.

so here is from the brief the way it would be marked and to give me an idea of how it should be done and what i must include within it.

The finished piece demonstrates a thorough understanding of the role of postproduction in the animation production process. (A1)

The finished piece demonstrates an understanding of the file convention and formatting requirements of broadcast output. (E1)

Demonstrates competency in basic editing, compositing, special effects and audio functions. (B1, D1)

Demonstrates the competent use of editing techniques and conventions to structure the video narrative competently.
(B1, C1) In other words show your progress and how you’ve contributed to the final piece.

Assessable Elements Percentage of Final Grade
